Pooja..naivedyam etc at home.....

Chitra RaPooja …functions….. Neivedyam…etc. at home…
____________________________________________
When some male or female coparcener passes away in the joint Hindu family, it is customary to observe certain restrictions on our celebrating festivals, doing some pooja, etc… for one day, three days, and one month, One year etc.may be these are written in some books which I could not lay hand nor enquire about it through Face book… or not written anywhere on books but continued as custom or practice followed by ancestors from generation..

During last three months a coparcener of self and another of my spouse left the world and thus the incidence of such a period occurred. Of course both had crossed 83 years of age and had lived a satisfactorily contented lives with most of their children being Engineers, doctors etc married and a few of them settled in US .Following the advice of elders or the oral advice of our Vadhyars, elder people or patties etc in the house etc we have decided not to celebrate any functions in the house for one year from the date of occurrence of any death in the family.

Today the 29th Sept.. Being Saraswathi Pooja.. the restriction as as applicable now…we did not do any pooja except worshipping a photo of goddess saraswathi as usual. But it was evening when I was talking to my sister in law in Bangalore she said we should keep all books for puja under Saraswathi photo and read books from tomorrow despite all these restrictions in force. So it became necessary for me to serach some books on subjects like Income Tax, Computer, Watson, Sanskrit, Cooking etc and keep them in pooja for reading from tomorrow. Meantime for the last one week or nine days our neighbor Palghat Iyer Maami who is not under such restrictions invites my spouse to their house everyday to see golu , sing songs and get prasdam The maamis bring me golu prasadams everyday when my spouse is away. Today also I wait for some Chundal, Pattani, Payaru, etc from the good neighbors.

Generally what they mean is we should not in a happy mood and celebrate the functions such as Pondukalukku Idal, or say Dievathukku idal,Bhagavathi sevai, and poojas at temple and also do not conduct any poojas etc at some temples and more so in Siva temples. However exceptions are that you can participate in Avani avittam, Deepavali, conduct marriages, seemantham etc etc and some of them without making it a function making special sweets etc..In particular we are told not to go twosome important Siva or Ayyappa temples for some months..Etc. However small functions like children”s or grandchildren”s birthday etc can be celebrated..

In addition we are also told not to participate and attend unimportant marriages etc of others not related to us..…In particular if there is some pooja or something thereof we shouldn’t participate in it. In particular any naivedyam or prasadam etc made and offered during Navarathri, Deepavali etc are banned.

However my daughter in USA is allowed to observe all functions including Golu etc and son at Fremont CA is covered under the restrictions as applicable to us.
However conveying happy Sarswathi Pooja or acknowledging same from others through Face book, Whatsapp, Twitter etc. are not specifically banned. I convey all best wishes for the whole year for all functions festivals etc through this medium.

THIRUTT KADAI OR IRUTTUKKADAI HALWA IT TASTES WELL

Thiruttu kadai halwa or Iruttukadai halwa. ......It tastes well….
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We come across several special eatable items with the name of a place tagged to it like Tirupathi laddu,Sabarimalai Aravana   payasam, and many others.…Of course these have gained importance or special choice on account of reasons associated with its preparation, use of ingredients, demand ..Supply factor, etc resulting in good taste.

I just recollect a few of them as under…

Kovilapatti kadalai urundai
Mysore Bonda
Madhur vadey
Thoothukkudi Macrons,
Hospet Menasinakai Bajji
Pune..Or Lonawala Chikki
Dadar Halwa
Thirunelveli halwa
Mysore Pak
Ambalappuzha Palpayasam,
Tirupathi Laddu,
Etc,,

I add an item in the list. Pathamadai Paai… (Mats).as requested by my spouse who hails from there.

Recently I had an occasion to buy some halwa packets as my wife was going to Bangalore alone for attending engagement function of my nephew’s daughter. And, as usual whenever she goes somewhere outside Chennai, carries with her packets of  some eatables for some selected relatives or friends.. It was just a one day trip before leaving had asked me to get some Iruttukadai halwa packets from a nearby shop among others to be given to some of the Bangalore relatives. I went to the shop and asked for Iruttukadai halwa when the shopkeeper corrected me saying it was IRUTTU KKADAI HALWA..May be I did not know its greatness. Later I found out it is made in Tirunelveli Tamilnadu in a hotel or shop under a light fluorescent lamp and for just an hour and half say 5.30 PM to 7 PM everyday using pure ghee and other materials using wheat etc.Mostly the ingredients were original and product tasty and on account of the limited stock made and the taste people used to flock to this Iruttukadai meaning dark shop and buy Halwa. Who ever goes to Tirunelveli does not miss this shop and buy Halwa after worshipping at    Nellaiappar the deity being Shiva     and other temples in Tirunelveli.

The IRUTTUKADAI HALWA has become world famous although several duplicate of similar brand halwa are available even online   through Amazon .com and others at very reasonable prize.

‘We had occasion to go to Trivandrum   Kerala three months back where we found that the same Halwa used to be got by some shops in Trivandrum from Tirunelveli everyday  and sold. Of course we did not buy it on account of certain personal health reasons.
After her leaving for Bangalore, I searched the fridge in the house and found she had kept one piece inside which I stealthily  took  and tasted it. ..It was nice despite standing instructions not to eat sweet items in large quantity..So it was just like a small Thiruttu..(Stealing) and hence the name suited to my action…THIRUTTU OF KADAI HALWAtra Rajesh Brindha Raghavan
