My personal computer …finally
reduced to a screen, keyboard and CPU all replaced…
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I bought my first
personal computer a desktop in 2000 while I was in Tuticorin in Tamilnadu. I don’t remember the brand name some Solitaire
or Solidaire or something .It was not from HP, Dell, Microsoft or Apple as
these names we not heard by me then. It had a monitor, CPU, Keyboard, two external
speakers brand Microtek and one HP printer probably I got it later from
Coimbatore I don’t member. The floppy discs were in use then which is not used
now. Of course we have pen drive and all other external storage devices now. I
narrate the history of events when each part got replaced, gifted, repaired etc
and finally the external speakers Microtek also got replaced yesterday. The
total cost of the whole system was around Rs 32000 if I remember correct and
the prices have become much cheaper now. The book value of the computer will be
less than Re 1 today since it is over nineteen years after it was
bought.
During my visit to USA
in 1993 I had occasion to see almost all these parts in personal computers and
use them I learnt about computer operations during my stay in USA in my younger brother’s house where I had gone on 6 month’s
tourist visa. He used to guide me about basics of computer and we used to have some
Operating system I don’t remember if it was Windows etc and internet had not come to
use by public. During my visits to various places in USA I used to spend a part
of time using Computer, learning the basics and also prepared a database of
various places visited and had it printed using a printer attached to
the personal computer.
Again in 1999 or so I
got a Note Book computer from my brother
which we call laptop now without much features and
used to operate it with no provision for internet facility and communication.
While using the
computer bought in 2000 there was no internet connectivity for public …the
mechanic who supplied computer used to come and install some internet
connectivity for limited period on payment. , However I had to got to browsing shop for sending any message to my
son who was in USA since 2000 and this computer became operational for internet
communication after some months. The computer I was using to see results
online and convey of my daughter who was studying
Medicine in PERUNDURAI, Medical College ,Erode, TN and also of
her classmates and inform periodically.
Now that eighteen
years are over many changes happened to my computer. On each occasion son or
daughter used to visit India they used to bring and leave on laptop at home for
use and throw or sale. In addition they used to bring one screen, keyboard or
CPU or microphone, etc My elder
brother Ananthanarayanan who was staying nearby in Besanthnagar used to
have two or three computers at his home with a local area net work etc. Whenever
I go to his house he was busy with the computers being a retired man and much interested
in various activities like world news, Astrology, Medicine ,Music etc So I remember
having given one of my CPU and screen or monitor to him which he used to
connect to his net work system , In the process of having some Office work like inquiry reports against staff members of the Bank etc I used the printer by
getting A4 papers etc and later removed the printer as it occupied space and printing
found not required after retirement .Of course in the house I have connected
the computer to one of the lines of power supply coming from Power Inverter or UPS and as
such the UPS which was previously attached to the computer also removed and kept in a safe loft in the house. Meantime
keyboards have been changed occasionally while getting one during return of USA
visits or the children and others coming etc.
Ultimately the
Microtek speaker was remaining connected to the PC although not used. It was
yesterday I got by Amazon a packet containing a small size external
speakers for the computer sent by my son
Rajesh. I removed the old Speakers and connected the new ones. However I felt
sorry in throwing away the old speakers and instead have kept them safe in some
place in the house.
My son, son in law, daughter
and daughter in law all tell me when the y visit India and see my possession that is the Personal Computer to throw away the present PC
and get a new one. But I like to retain it with its hard discs etc all filled
with thousands of Photos, Blogs, writings, so many other matters etc, which
they do not know. This is after deleting
many unwanted photos, posts etc as the disks are almost full and no place for g mail , Face
book or any other things.
We or I feel sad to
throw away or discard old things but like to keep them safe as a contemporary
for me. See the picture of External speaker disconnected yesterday but
preserved for future and kept safe along with discarded UPS, Printer, and
monitors etc.. .
Again my wife
always complains that I keep all old things for years together and
get unnecessary things now and them. Even this new speaker she was asking me
why do you get
a new one when the old one is working and that you are wasting money. But I tell her
to
retain things belonging to her remaining for decades
in the house like I got her one MERRITT
sewing Machine in 1974 at Rs 320. .from LRDE Canteen,
Bangalore through my elder brother Sundaram who was with
LRDE after my marriage in 1974..It was given to her as present by me so that she would
be engaged in work at home ,Although the sewing machine has accompanied us to
various places of posting in India say
around 21 during my service in Bank I have never found her using it anytime.
So that is our liking
for anything old and in life also we feel happy that children, grandchildren
etc like as may be because we are old and getting older. OLD is gold
. Given below
is the picture of my speakers temporarily discarded
