POONAL Notes to follow..by Brahmachari and parents.......
According to the sastras, the lower limit of Brahmin youngsters is eight years and the upper limit is sixteen which means a grace of eight years. It is sinful in the not to have performed upanayanam of a Brahmin boy before his passing the upper age limit.
Uttarayana is the right period to perform upanayanam- from the Tamil month Thai to Ani. when the sun journeys northwards. While this is the right time for marriages also, the season of spring(Chithirai to Vaikasi)is considered particularly auspicious. For upanayana the month specially favoured is Masi. Upanayana and marriage are not favoured during Dakshinayana(from the Tamil month Adi to the end of Margazhi).
Nowadays, for various reasons, the upanayana and marriage ceremonies are delayed for as long as possible and celebrated in any month other than Margazhi. The results are there for you to see. But one must be happy perhaps that a function called marriage is still performed somehow. So long as people perform it, let them perform it at any time. If we take this attitude, marriages may be permitted in any season as a desperate step. But upanayana is a different matter. It should never be permitted in Dakshinayana. If it is for some reason celebrated during this period, I would ask for its performance again in Uttarayana. Money is the main problem in conducting an upanayana or a marriage. Parents postpone the upanayana because they want to perform it at the same time as the marriage of their daughter so as to minimise the expenses.
The upanayana is sometimes performed when the boy is only five years old. This is called "kamyopanayana", "Kamya" meaning in pursuance of desire. Such early upanayana is all right if you want the child to develop inwardly at an early age. But seven years is the proper age for the child to be invested with sacred thread because by now he would have learned enough Sanskrit to chant the mantras clearly. Nowadays, the "thread ceremony" is conducted together with the marriage that is when the "boy" is 30 or 35 years old. So to suggest that the upanayana needs to be performed only when the child is seven years old - and not at five - would be taken as a joke. Joke or no joke, it [the delay in performing the upanayana] should make you uneasy deep within if you have some concern for the Vedic dharma.
Adi Sankara's upanayana, it is believed, was performed when he was five years old. If the child is extraordinarily intelligent and can articulate words properly, his upanayana may be performed at five years.
A boy receives during this ceremony a sacred thread called Yajñopaveetam that he wears. The Yajñopavita ceremony announced that the child had entered into formal education. In the modern era, the Upanayana rite of passage is open to anyone at any age.
sacred thread which represent three promises (vows) he makes: to respect the knowledge, the parents and the society.
In our families Upanayanam is not held as stipulated within the age gap etc for various reasons, The older the boy becomes his desire towards worldly attachment increases and may not like to learn and practice duties of a Brahmachari. When the child is below 12 years he listens to parents and likes to learn about Vedas, our duties etc including being a Brahmachari observing certain daily requirements as a Brahmachari including wearing Poonal performing Sandhyavandanam, Madhyanikam and Sayam etc…
Upanayana, sometimes known outside India by the name, "sacred thread ceremony," is a Hindu rite-of-passage ritual. Traditionally, the ceremony was performed to mark the point at which male children began their formal education. Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vysyas are called dvijas meaning "twice born."

THE STAGES OF LIFE SYSTEM IN HINDU SOCIETY
There are four stages of life viz. Brahmachari (student), Grihastha (Householder) Vanaprasta (forest dweller or Hermit in semi retirement) Sannyasa (the renounced one in full retirement) and the Dharma of each is different. The four stages may be said to represent periods of Preparation, Production, Service and Retirement.
"People do not have to be taught to want to be happy, to want to be secure or to want the respect and admiration of their friends and associates - though often they need instruction 'how' to secure these things.
Deeper Hindu thinking suggests, however, that there is also a natural progression of these values so that one should grow toward more fundamental interests.
This movement toward more enduring and satisfying values has been institutionalized in the understanding of the four stages of life known as 'Ashramas".
BRAHMACHARYA (Celibate)
BRAHMACARYA means Student, usually between 12 and 24 years of age.The first stage is Brahmacharya. The duty of a student is to study. On initiation into Brahmacharya by means of the Upanayana rites, he becomes a 'Dvija' (a twice born). 'Upanayana' means 'bringing near'- the disciple is brought near the Guru for receiving the initiation of mantras.
For the Brahmachari, celibacy is his forte, discipline is his norm, devotion to his Guru is his duty and concentration in studies is his vocation.
In "Gurukula Vasam"( or staying with the preceptor) he learns the nuances and intricate renderings and interpretations of Vedas, Upanishads and Sastras though by means of rote so that when he comes of age the significance of what he learnt would be realized by him in real life situations, which he would be facing in his next Ashrama.
Thus, it is a period of probation, a period of training, in a practical manner without prejudice to the injunctions of Sastras he had so studiously learnt as a Brahmachari. Only when someone consoles we feel relief; only the 'Guru Upadesa' can change our mental attitude. The first lesson of the student is the performance of 'Sandhya Vandanam' at morn, noon and evening, Ablutions, recitation of Gayatri, breath control, sipping and sprinkling of water, pouring libations of water to the Sun-God etc. were enjoined on the twice-born and they could never be missed.
Again my poonal and that of Sundaram was done along with marriage of our sister Bhagavathy in Bangalore…Of course I was studying in second year BSC and Sundaram was studying in Engineering at Tata Institute Bangalore. About Narayanan it was in 1971 along with marriage of our sister Lakshmi at Madras .About other elder brother I do not know the years but must have been when they were below 12 years. Mohan poonal was along with marriage of Sundaram at Chennai in 1974. Others in the list Karthik, Sridhar, Ram, Rajesh, Kutta , Velu Vipin, and other sons in law wtc.....I don’t know the dates but hope they wear poonal as all of them are married and Poonal was a license for getting married.

Happy when examinations were cancelled....
It was 1963 March when I had appeared for SSLC examination held by Mysore state Secondary Examination Board.I had papers like English, Social Studies,General Science, Mathematics,Sanskrit, Hindi and Kannada. My school and centre was Seshadripuram High School, Banglore.
After writing English,General Science comprising Physics, Chemistry,Bioligy and Mathematics I was happy the exams will be over soon within a week giving me relief from studying or pretending to be studying in front of parents. My parents were expecting I should get high marks, get a rank, study Medicine, become a Doctor or Collector. It was astonishing for
me to see the morning News Paper Deccan Herald that all the 5 exams held were cancelled since the question papers had leaked out.Ofcourse my parents asked me to recollect the books, guides, notes and prepare well for re exams. For me it was pain to study again from books I hardly opened and studied. The re exams were held ..I appeared again without any more preparation ...but couldnot get high marks.
In my efforts to get admission in a good College,I took my father to the Principal,St Joseph's college, Bangalore. My father requested the Principal to give a seat for PUC and told the Principal that I got less marks since the original examinations were cancelled and reexams held. The good Principal admitted me in the College and I came out of the College with a BSC degree in 1967.Thus cancellation of SSLC examination helped me get a seat in St Joseph's College.
I was reminded of it hearing elections to RK Nagar due on 12 th got cancelled by the Election Commission.Ofcourse the troubles for the electorate and the parties must be immense...

Thondikulam ...my connections ..
I was born in Trichur in 1947.We hear people telling ...I hail from Palghat, Pathamadai,Vaikom,Tanjore, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, etc. So I used to say I am from Palghat.
But the fact remains I donot have much connection or link with Thondikulam a village it gramam in Palghat. It appears there are over 100 gramams or agraharams in Palghat like Noorni,Kalpathi, Thondikulam, Tharakkad,Thathmangalam, etcThese are plsces where Brahmins migrated from Tanjore or Kumbakonam decades ago and settled..
Probably my father was not brought up in Palghat. He had his schooling in Ernakulam and College Education in Madras.Later he served in Cochin state service mostly neighbouring to Trichur. As such my link with Thondikulam through him was less.
It was during my service in Bank I came across a few persons hailing from Thondikulam..
I was married to Brindhalakshmi of Andipatti her father hailing from Pathamadai and mother from Thondikulam. Her father's mother Lakshmi also was from Thondikulam. But we did not know them being from same place Thondikulam before marriage as they too lived in Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, etc.
Thondikulam A Seshadri was my senior in Inspection and Audit. He was from Delhi or so and not much linked to Thondikulam.
Thondikulam Easwar Iyer Dhandayuthapani was my senior in Branches and Audit.Incudentally his sister was my wife's aunt who had passed away much early in life.He studied in Nurani etc but had not much similarity with me as I never studied in Palghat.
Then Thondikulam Ramachandran Anantharaman was my colleague in Bank of India in Bangalore. He too lived in Banglore from birth so not much contact with Thondikulam. His father Ramachandran is my wife's uncle's or maama's son.My wife has never seen them.He still continues in Bangalore.
My wife was telling me I donot know my kuladeivam..Etc when I thought of this situation.Of course Venkatachalapathi is our kuladeivam and Manapallikkavu our Kaavu as heard from our elders.
Ofcourse my children and grandchildren will have lesser idea about Thondikulam .and may know it as a place in India.
.
There are hardly 20 families or so in Thondikualam and all must be related to each other but migration to other places have made such a situation .Also many of them are abroad and come home rarely. There is one famous Sasthapreedhi festival yearly when many people come home
.
Nurani is the adjacent big village and many males marry from Nurani. My mother is from a large family in Nurani..Being married at age of 9 she also did not have much remembrances of the place.

I was borne when India was not independent???
Among many achievements I possess,I was born in June 1947 before India got independence on 15 th August,1947.And my birthdate was 19 it is considered special number . I used to tell my spouse and children that I was born during British rule and hence possesses qualities such as strict, punctual ,honest, etc .
Incidentally I remember my School days in Bangalore after 1960 .My father was a retired person and he used to guide us in learning English Grammar.During holidays we four or five ...3 brothers,2 sisters, one niece all studying in Seshadripuram High School,Bangalore used to have following routine . We are from a large family with over a dozen children..In a joint middle-class family.
Chanting one chapter of Bagavad Gita.He used to chant from book,we had to see Gita Press book, follow and chant .it used to be good making us strong in Sanskrit and understanding the essence of Bagavadgita namely ...Do your duty...Donot think of results.... Whatever is bound to happen will occur, what ever happened is for good,etc..
In the morning after taking bath he used to do Sooryanamaskaram chanting Aadhithyahrudhayam ...I had to join him.He used to do yogasanas including shiras aasana.
Since I was not a recognised Brahmachari being without poonal, sandhyavandanam was not performed dailytill I got my Poonal while I was in 2 nd year BSC.
He had a book of Wren and Martin for English, used to guide all of us questions in Grammar,Active voice,Ideoms, figures of speech,Simile,Pathetic fallacy, pun, etc. It was nice we could learn Grammar well.
Then he used to ask questions from General Knowledge...Some questions like Prime Minister, President,Finance Minister,State ministers, etc.it was around 1957 or so we had hardly 12 states with Congress ruling everywhere. We remember his telling our mother to vote for Congress when they used to cast votes in Elections.May be in 1957 first ministry formed by Communist party was formed in Kerala.Probably the ministry was dismissed within 2 years and the state had distinction being under President's rule for over 15 times.
It was today I saw results of Uttarakhand,Uttar Pradesh,Manipur, etc being won by BJP ..They rule other states like Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh Assam,Arunachalpradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, etc ..While Congress and sllisnce have power in Karnataka,Punjab, etc Tamilnadu they have the Dravidian party ADMK,and other parties ruling states are Telengana,Aam Aadmi,Communist alliance,Trinamool Congress etc with more than 20 states all over India.
The BJP ....if possesses sufficient assembly and Rajyasabha seats can have good governance by ability to pass bills in both the houses .
Let us hope for stable Governments in states and centre.
Ofcourse among various other things ,my father used to see we go to temples, chant Vishnusahasrananam,Aadhithyahrudhayam,Mahishasuramardhini stotram,Sundarakantam daily..Later I have started reading Narayaneeyam, Subramanya Bhujangam, etc ..Daily.
We should follow our parents.

One of my friends had posted in Facebook..
My son appears for 10 th exam starting tomorrow.Pray for him..
I sent my wishes ...Copied from another well-wisher and posted in Facebook.

Later I realised...The student should not note my copying and pasting and do so in exam...In a lighter vein.
When I don't know to write in Tamil here,I copy others..But I never copied from others in any of my exams in my history...

Contacts lost...need her help..
I was having this Samsung cellphone having not many features...you can telephone to any number receive calls, hear FM music etc .
Last year when I went to USA my son in law got me a Motorola X Smartphone... With more features. .It serves as a handy computer.... Plus phone... Mainly I get it connected through Wi Fi Modem connected to landline for internet purposes I am able to use Facebook read newspapers, see grandchildren children, etc through Skype ...watch stock exchange movements through Rediff, Economic Times,,read blogs, write blogs, etc I am also able to use the messenger for sending messages and receive SMS ,etc .but I donot use it for seeing videos, U Tubes, etc The complaint from my wife is that I donot do any productive work instead am always busy with the smartphone...She even objects my using it as a camera or use WhatsApp through it. See the plight......Of course when she wants auto or taxi, she asks me to use Ola App and Amazon App for buying some book, etc through the phone. .
My old phone Samsung I gave her for use She does not know how to charge it from mains or get credit by paying Vodafone dealer She has some hundred numbers saved in it as contacts..mostly her relatives and none of them ever call her or my number.but she calls all of them regularly for broadcasting all news Even that I have saved in the phone. She does not know even the telephone number of the cellphone... I have saved it as My number in the phone... She is not much familiar with cellphone or computer operations...despite my teaching her so many things orally......
She goes out to Mylapore, T Nagar,Adyar etc and I give the phone to her I have taught her how to receive calls After she goes out,I telephone say after one hour to find out where she is..and to tell her I am making coffee with decoction she has kept saved or for eating any fruits available till she returns. she responds..and thus the phone is useful between us for communication and sanction or approval...But she will never telephone to my number and inform me where she is...When some call comes in my phone she takes it does not swipe or click answer properly and the line gets disconnected. What can I do?
So this is how the cellphone is useful between us..
But recently it has become necessary for me to contact her for knowing telephone numbers of my contacts .During my recent visit to USA while I was spending time with my phone...was seeing apps, options and settings and while pressing some button all contacts disappeared.Otherwise I could get the dialled numbers, calls received, and other numbers of contacts stored in phone. In the past once I had pressed some wrong button changed language and set it for operation by blind persons. At that time I got it fixed paying Rs 650 to the phone repairing guy. This time when I went to him with the problem he said some software is gone and would replace it on paying Rs.850.This time I told my wife the repair cost for approval which she refused saying no need to have contacts with you which is a recurring unproductive cost.Instead you contact me through my number and I have all contacts stored. She has more of her friends and relatives contacts in her new Microsoft phone than those of mine. Also now she can filter and allow me only required calls to be made stipulating time limit .Incidentally my memory is so poor I donot remember telephone numbers of my contacts... Atlast, I am compelled to remember her phone number lest I cannot contact any others...The numbers available in my phonethrough WhatsApp contacts are not many and thus her help has become necessary ..
That is the position....

Mangalyam tantunanena mama jeevana hetuna: kanthe badhnami subhage twam jeeva sarada satam ||
Tying the thali or the mangalsutra around the bride's neck by the groom is one of the most important rituals of a hindu wedding.
While the groom ties three knots, the pundit chants this sloka which means; “This is a sacred thread. This is essential for my long life. I tie this around your neck O maiden having many auspicious attributes. May you live happily for a hundred years (with me).”

On 19th January 2017...Marriage of Vipin with Rajalakshmi at Brahmana Samooham, Gayathri Kalyanamandapam, Edapalli, Ernakulam.. Kerala..
It was planned our attending Vipin's marriage while we were in USA upto 1.1.2017.During the engagement held at Palghat during last week of June,2016 it was orally agreed we would attend the marriage in Jan 2017 ..
.
Marriage is an event cum occasion when members of the large extended family came together, mingle and exchange our thoughts on many matters, participate, and feel immersed in various events like mappalai azhappu,Kasi yathrai,Oonjal, vratham, muhurtham, reception, kattichadham, etc
.On 18th we participated in
Nischidam and reception in evening both at Edapalli. On 19th Jan we had marriage muhurtham by 8 AM...then aasirvadham, etc ..
We had delicious food including payasam, paapdam, sweets, etc throughout ...although it would have given a mild increase of blood sugar of a few non sweet people .
We two...Me and wife Brindha stayed at Aishwarya Hotel,Off MG Road, Ernakulam 16th to 18th ...forenoon taking good food at hotels nearby like Arya Bhavan, Bharat Tiffin, etc It was a privileged or fortune we could visit temples ... The married couple reached home by 6 PM .
As elderly person narrated my married life for 43 years..
I told..Vipin...She will be wrong and correct always and we have to adjust ,co.exist and lead a happy and peaceful married life. I advised her chanting Slokas daily and learn music, dance, etc.
I took leave of the young couple by night train on 19 th night conveying all our blessings to them.Along with cloths of Brindha ,packet of Murukku, thengizhal
,Parupputhengai,coconut,etc accompanied me home.
That was a nice marriage ..
Today We wish the reception at Palghat all the best..She will be present and represent me...
I reached home Chennai on 20 th 4 PM amidst bundh and protests at Chennai..With all shops closed etc..
